Despite overwhelming bipartisan support in the U.S. House, the Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act (“SAFE Banking Act”) appears unlikely to pass the Senate any time soon. Senate Banking Chairman Mike Crapo (R-ID), speaking at a conference for the Independent Community Bankers of America, acknowledged the problems created by excluding marijuana-related businesses (MRBs) from the financial system but concluded that “[a]s long as cannabis is illegal under federal law, it seems to me to be difficult for us to resolve the issue.”
